Once upon a time, in a magical decade called the 90s, DC and Marvel produced a run of comics under the shared imprint known as Amalgam. The idea was to create completely new characters by merging two well-known heroes (one from each company) into one mashup hero. Perhaps the most beloved character to come out of this collaboration was Dark Claw, a character which combined Batman and Wolverine into an extremely awesome hybrid hero. He didn’t stick around for long, but he made quite an impression on readers, primarily due to his unbelievable awesomeness. I mean, just look at him:
Amalgam Comics was preceded by a DC vs. Marvel crossover event in 1996, which pitted the two comic book universes against each other. Dark Claw, also known as Logan Wayne, first appeared in Marvel Versus DC Vol. 1 #3, dubbed “Round Three” of the DC vs. Marvel crossover showdown, which was followed by DC Versus Marvel Vol. 1 #4, or “Round Four.”
The crossover event saw Marvel heroes facing off against DC heroes in multiple battles. In addition to the all-out war between the two universes, this run of issues also debuted the Amalgam characters. It’s a long story, but the war between Marvel and DC characters began when two cosmic entities known as the Brothers decided to see which of the two universes was better. After loads of superhero battles were fought, the Brothers eventually merged both universes together, thus creating the Amalgam universe.
Along with Dark Claw, other mashup heroes were created thanks to the Brothers, such as Super Soldier (Superman and Captain America), Spider-Boy (Ben Reilly and Conner Kent), and Speed Demon (The Flash and Ghost Rider).
After the DC vs. Marvel brawl was over, and both universes had been combined, the Amalgam Comics line officially launched, and Dark Claw got his own standalone issue – Legends of the Dark Claw Vol. 1 #1. One year later, in 1997, he got another standalone issue called Dark Claw Adventures Vol. 1 #1.
So, who exactly is this amazing mashup hero? Logan Wayne (AKA Dark Claw) has a similar background to Bruce Wayne. When he was a kid, his parents were murdered in front of him. He then went on to grow up and fight crime, just like Batman. However, unlike Batman, Logan Wayne also happened to be a mutant and was shipped off to be a part of the Weapon X program, just like our old friend Wolverine.
As you can see in the image above, Dark Claw is fighting someone who just so happens to look like a combination of the Joker and Sabretooth. That’s his archenemy, a hybrid of the two villains called Hyena (AKA Creed Quinn), who was also a part of the Weapon X program.
Dark Claw has the perfect combination of Wolverine’s mutant abilities and Batman’s detective skills. And as you’ve probably already guessed, he’s pretty grumpy to boot. He fights crime alongside his sidekick Sparrow (a combination of Robin and the X-Men’s Jubilee) in New Gotham City, a combination of Gotham City and Marvel’s depiction of New York City.
Amazon user James Etchison provides this helpful review of Legends of the Dark Claw #1:
“Really, Batman and Wolverine?? Come on, with a mix like that, you are begging for a longer series to carry this out.”
