About 43 seconds into Iron Man Gamma Protocol, a new Marvel fan film, there’s a shot of Tony Stark’s face inside the Iron Man suit. When I first watched it, I was positive that it was simply spliced from one of the Marvel Studios films, which seemed like a lazy move for someone making an “original” fan film. But as I watched the rest of Gamma Protocol, I realized that the scene in question wasn’t actually taken from a Marvel film. It was just so well made that it was nearly indistinguishable from its feature-length inspiration.
Take a look at the amazing fan film below:
That’s not to say that everything in Anthony Mcgrath’s fan film is on par with Marvel’s CGI. At times, the extended scene in which Iron Man fights Hulk comes across as a bit amateurish. But considering Captain America: Civil War had a budget of $250 million, the fact that Mcgrath (a self-described “animator” and “CG generalist” from England) is even in the same ballpark, is nothing short of amazing.
And as his tweet below attests, Mcgrath himself is amazed by the internet’s reception to his project:
